The Role of a Milling Machine.

A milling machine is famous as a machine tool. It is generally used in workshop and factory settings to cut metallic objects in curved, flat or even irregular plane. The metallic work piece is clamped to a table that can be fed in vertical and horizontal directions. The mill is the cutter. It is a circular cutting tool with a number of cutting edges that generally remains stationary while the job piece is fed into it. It can cut on its tip as well as on its flanks. The cutting depth and the speed of the cut can all set and managed extremely precisely. A soluble and water oil coolant is used when cutting to maintain a very low temperature for both the work and the cutting instrument.

A milling machine can be either vertical or horizontal in nature. The vertical milling tool has the spindle axis of the mill oriented in the vertical plane. In this way it is alike to drill, and indeed it can be used in this way. It can also do plunge milling cuts simply. Vertical mills can be either turrent mills or bedmills. The bedmill spindle moves parallel to its own axis while the table moves at right angles to the spindle axis. With the turret mills it is the table that moves while rotating spindle remains in single position. These instruments commonly considered to be the more versatile of the two.



The horizontal milling instrument has its spindle axis oriented in the horizontal plane. The cutter is mounted in an arbor, which provides it large versatility. The table holding the job piece is still able of moving in the horizontal and vertical because the cutting instrument is well supported by the arbor, this milling arrangement is able of making heavy cuts. This is helpful when top levels of material need to be removed fast.
